Quebec
Ice Storm
The Ice Storm of 1998 was a natural disaster like no other. It
affected millions of Canadians and left everyone wondering just
how vulnerable modern society was to the elemental forces of nature.
More than half of the urban areas in Quebec and 15 per cent of
those in Ontario were affected by power outages. There was no
power: no lights or heat for millions of people, smack in the
middle of
a Canadian winter with temperatures dropping.
Freezing rain fell for four days without stop. Thousands of power
poles and pylons came crashing down under tons of ice.
Vancouver Island Powerline traveled across the country to assist
with rebuilding the power network. The first stop was Ontario
and upon completion of Hydro One's requirement, we dispatched
near
Grandby, Quebec. Weeks were spent stringing transmission and
distributions lines until Quebec Hydro was able to handle the
situation. Vancouver
Island Powerline received letters of recognition from both
Quebec Hydro and Ontario Hydro for outstanding
effort, competence and safety.
